About Chris O'Brien:

O'Brien first took to the guitar after seeing Shawn Colvin and the Indigo Girls in concert when he was twelve. Struck by his passion to learn the guitar, family friend Dar Williams sat down with Chris and taught him to play some of his first chords.

Chris O’Brien grew up surrounded by music and musicians. He was raised on a steady diet of Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. Influenced by Martin Sexton, David Gray, Richard Shindell and, of course, Dar Williams, he began crafting his own songs at the age of 14.

Chris has shared the stage with such artists as David Wilcox, Brian Webb, Meg Hutchinson, Antje Duvekot, Vance Gilbert, Mark Erelli, Ryan Montbleau, Rachael Davis, Anne Heaton, Jess Klein, Gregory Douglass, Jake Armerding and many others.

About Anne Heaton:

Boston-based singer-songwriter Anne Heaton will release her thoughtful and delicate new collection of music, Blazing Red, this fall. The critically acclaimed artist returned to the studio after years of touring to put together her third album with co-producer Gary Maurer (of HEM). Recorded mostly live-in-the-studio, Heaton’s new record maps personal themes with organic vocals, pop melodies and piano-led arrangements. Heaton expresses feelings of loss and connection, from the desire to, one day, be a good mom, to letting go of past relationships. The music is at times lush and whimsical -- Heaton is often backed by a string quartet- and alternately intimate, she sings and plays piano only. Contemporary singer-songwriters Joe Crookston and Chuck E. Costa, two emerging artists on the acoustic music scene, share a concert bill at Club Passim in Cambridge on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 8 p.m. Tickets, priced at $12 ($10 for members), will be available at the door of the famed Harvard Square folk music institution, located at 47 Palmer Street, and also can be purchased in advance by calling (617) 492-7679 or online at www.center.org.

Joe Crookston, who has been developing a reputation as an energetic and thoroughly engaging live performer, was among the artists voted “Most Wanted to Return” during the 2007 Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and wowed attendees at this year’s festival with a mix of his own lyrically compelling, narrative-style songs and choice covers (including a solo acoustic version of Supertramp’s “The Logical Song).” A serious craftsman, he has heeded his father’s advice to work with his hands (and heart) in metal and wood. His latest album, Able Baker Charlie & Dog, a collection of songs inspired by stories ordinary New Yorkers from the Finger Lakes region related to him during his year-long travels under a songwriting grant from The Rockefeller Foundation, reached the top of the folk/acoustic radio charts this spring. The rural Ohio-born and raised and Ithaca, New York-based artist’s previous release, Fall Down As The Rain, was a Performing Songwriter Magazine Top -12 DIY independent recording.

Chuck E. Costa, known for his candid and visceral delivery of literate and well-crafted contemporary folk tunes, has been garnering much critical acclaim over the past couple of years. Costa, whose songs were described as “sensitive, introspective… inspired” in The New York Times, won the 2008 Rocky Mountain Folks Fest Songwriting Contest and will again grace the festival’s main stage next year. In 2007, he was finalist in the prestigious Grassy Hill/Kerrville NewFolk competition, as well as a Solarfest (Vermont) songwriting contest winner and Telluride Troubadour third-place winner. A native New Yorker, he returned to the Northeast and has released three independent albums and an EP since graduating from the University of Colorado in 2002. The opening track of his latest, Where The Songs Come From, was featured on a compilation CD released by Hear Music and distributed at Starbucks throughout North America.

Geoff will teach "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out", written by Jimmy Cox in 1923, in the key of C in standard tuning.

Eric Clapton's 1992 version from his "Unplugged" album is one of the more recent of a long string of successes for this classic song, which has become closely associated with the Great Depression that began when the Stock Market crashed on Tuesday, October 29, 1929.

Long associated also with Bessie Smith, it was her last hit recorded in 1929. It was also recorded in the 1930s by Eddie Condon and Count Basie, by Lavern Baker in the 1950s, by Sam Cooke, Dave Guard, Jose Feliciano, Odetta and Nina Simone in the 1960s, by Tim Hardin in the 1970s and by Rod Stewart in the 1980s.

Who are the great songwriters in America today? Not the most popular or the richest. Simply the greats. Ask any student of the form, and Janis Ian will be counted among them. The writer of “Jesse”, a song recorded by so many others that few remember Ian wrote it; “Stars”, possibly the best song ever written about the life of a performer, recorded by artists as diverse as Mel Torme and Cher; and the seminal “At Seventeen”, a song that brought her five Grammy nominations (the most any solo female artist had ever garnered) in 1975. And of course her first hit, "Society’s Child", which ignited controversy from coast to coast, resulting in the burning of a radio station, the firing of disc jockeys who played it, and a generation hungering for the truth finally having a female songwriter to stand beside Bob Dylan. Ian is a formidable talent, a force of nature. Ella Fitzgerald called her “The best young singer in America”. Chet Atkins said “Singer? You ought to hear that girl play guitar; she gives me a run for my money!” Reviewers have called her live performances “overwhelming to the spirit and soul”, and “drenched with such passion, the audience feels they’ve been swept up in a hurricane.” Not to mention her short stories, her songs for film and television… and oh, yes. She also runs a foundation, named for her mother, that works with various universities and colleges to supply scholarships for returning students; they’ve raised over $300,000 to date!

2008 sees a double-whammy: Society’s Child: My Autobiography, released in North America by Tarcher/Penguin, has already gotten stellar reviews. And the accompanying double CD-set, Best of Janis Ian: The Autobiography Collection, contains 31 tracks, and is the first “best of” Janis has ever released in North America. Ian is not an artist for the faint of heart, for timid souls who prefer auto-tuned vocals to the voice of real experience. Her very first demo recording was “Hair of Spun Gold,” sung into her father’s tape recorder when she was thirteen years old, “It was good to start young,” says Ian. “It was good to learn, early on, that what matters is the music. Bob Martin (born in 1942 in Lowell, Massachusetts) is an American folk singer/songwriter. While attending Suffolk UniversityBoston during the 1960s, he was influenced by the Cambridge folk scene and played at the Nameless Coffeehouse, Club 47 (now Club Passim), and other folk clubs. Emerging from the same New England city as Jack Kerouac, Martin was heavily influenced by the beat poet's writing and career. It was in 1972, fifteen years after Kerouac's On the Road was published, that Bob Martin made his first album Midwest Farm Disaster for RCA Records in Nashville. He worked closely with Chet Atkins, an executive at RCA at the time and many exceptional studio musicians including drummer Kenneth Buttrey, a key player on Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde album. Due to personnel changes at the label and the onset of disco, Martin's career was not given priority.

In 1974, he "dropped out" of pop culture and moved to a farm in West Virginia with his family. He continued to write songs, poetry, novels and pursued his muse through various artistic endeavors. In 1982, he recorded his second album, Last Chance Rider for June Appal Recordings of Whitesburg, KY. The record was recognized as one of the top three folk albums in the country by the National Association of Independent Record Distributors. Martin however chose to play music on his own terms and didn't pursue the music business as a way of life.

It was another ten years, until the release of his third album in 1997. This album, The River Turns the Wheel, contained backing vocals by Bill Morrissey and Cormac McCarthy and was on Martin's own label, Riversong Records. This may be considered Bob Martin's most commercially successful album to date. Despite his passivity toward the music biz, "The River Turns The Wheel" was noticed by music critics around the country. The CD reached number sixteen on the Gavin Americana Chart and was chosen one of the top ten albums in 1997 by Brad Kava of The San Jose Mercury News. Dave Perry of The Lowell Sun chose it as the best folk album of 1997 and Tom Flannery of The Electric City News also picked it as the best CD of that year. He toured nationally and opened for Merle Haggard in 1999.

Martin didn't wait quite so long to release his fourth album. "Next To Nothin" was put out on Riversong Records in 2000, and received more rave critical reviews and extensive airplay on Americana radio programs around the country.

In 2006 Martin completed his first non-fiction novel and he continues to perform nationally and internationally.

The Folk Song Society is pleased to present a special concert with the British duo Dave Webber and Anni Fentiman. Dave and Anni are well-known in traditional music circles, and have developed a talent and firm commitment to unaccompanied singing. Both were members of the British a capella quartet Beggers Velvet during it's eight year existence and many highly successful U.S. tours. This is a powerful singing duo not to be missed.

Dave and Anni's enthusiasm sparkles in their powerful vocal performances which have developed from their involvement in traditional and traditional-style music for over 25 years. Their first love is accappella singing, both solo and in harmony, and they present a varied cross section of material from the delicate solo to the rousing chorus.

Anni's intuitive harmony adds colour and depth to the duo whilst her solo performance is clear and sensitive. From the North East of England Anni is a "Geordie" and presents an unusual repertoire featuring dialect songs earning Anni a well deserved reputation in English traditional music circles. Dave sings with a rich and powerful style. His love of this music is clear in his performance, from the gentle and plaintive traditional ballad to the stirring chorus song which inspires even the most reticent audience to join in. Dave is also a song writer of note with many of his better known songs often assumed to be traditional. Foremost among these is probably "Lady of Autumn" and many of Dave's songs have been heard as far afield as Australia. Dave has published a book of his self penned songs all of which are written in the traditional idiom.

Apart from their concert work, Dave and Anni's recordings are frequently featured on national and local radio and have been used for television. They occasionally combine their talents with other performers in musical and theatrical productions, the most widely acclaimed of which is probably 'The Widow's Uniform', a musical play in which Dave and Anni play leading roles. This show has toured provincial theatres throughout England, and has been favourably reviewed by BBC Radio 4.
